IoT Enclosure DFM Checklist Before Injection Mold Quote
An IoT enclosure that looks finished in CAD can still stall at the mold quote stage if PCB clearance, port placement or wall thickness were not reviewed first. This checklist helps hardware teams prepare an enclosure for quote.
IoT enclosure DFM should confirm PCB clearance, port and antenna placement, wall thickness and assembly method before the design goes out for an injection mold quote.
PCB clearance and port placement
Port cutouts, antenna zones and PCB standoffs need clearance confirmed before tooling, since a missed clearance issue after mold cut is expensive to fix.
- PCB outline and component height clearance.
- Port, button and connector cutout tolerances.
- Antenna keep-out zones if wireless components are used.
Wall thickness and structural risk
Uneven wall thickness causes sink marks and warping in molded enclosures. The design should be reviewed for consistent wall thickness before it is sent for a mold quote.
- Consistent wall thickness across the enclosure.
- Rib and boss design near thin-to-thick transitions.
- Draft angle for clean ejection from the mold.
Assembly method and serviceability
How the enclosure closes and whether it needs to be opened for service changes screw boss, snap fit and gasket requirements.
- Screw boss or snap fit closure method.
- Gasket or sealing requirement for the enclosure.
- Whether the device needs to be opened for battery or service access.
